Henry Gibbs Murphy grew up in Davis, a community located in Carteret County, the geographic center of coastal North Carolina. Davis is on the Western shore of Core Sound a major historical waterfowl hunting ground. Murphy was the descendent of a family well known for their skills as duck hunters, guides and decoy makers. Murphy was employed as a local guide for hunters who were drawn to the birds migrating over the shallow, salty waters of Core Sound. Most of the shooting was in stake blinds in open waters between the mainland and the outer Banks. The blinds were built out of four- cornered walled enclosures held in place with pilings. Hunters used ladders to enter and exit the blinds. Murphy is credited with a number finely carved redhead, Scaup, green-winged teal, pintail, black duck, mallard and Canada geese decoys. Old gunning repaint. Full size decoy. Influential Maryland carver.- Robert McGaw (1879 - 1958) Havre de Grace, MD. Robert "Bob" McGaw was born in 1879 in Havre de Grace, Maryland. While working on the Pennsylvania railroad he carved decoys by hand for his own use as well as for other hunters. When the hunting season was over he also carved miniatures. McGaw owned the first machine in Havre de Grace that was able to make decoys. He later sold the machine to Madison Mitchell (another well-known carver); however, the machine is now exhibited at the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum a tribute to the vast legacy of decoy carvers in the area. Factory- The Animal Trap Company of North America (ATCNA) produced hunting decoys for a greater number of years than any other decoy factory. Long before they produced decoys they were a major producer of animal traps. In 1918, they began to produce wood decoys in Lititz, Penn. and later in Pascagoula, Miss. This company produced a number of models, sizes, and in various finishes. Their wood decoys were all made on duplicating lathe machines.
